Howard J. Powell

U.S. Veteran

Howard James Powell, resident of Ponca City, passed away peacefully Friday, May 9th, 2013, at his home. He was 94.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18th at Trout Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.

Howard was born January 1st, 1919 to Andrew Giles Powell and Josephine Kenton Weathers in Ponca City, OK, on his parents homestead they acquired in the land run. He completed his education in Ponca City, graduating from Ponca City High School in 1936.

After high school Howard enlisted in the Army and served as an aircraft mechanic in the 70th Service Squadron in Newfoundland. While home on leave he met Mary Catherine Drain, and they were married on June 24th, 1950. They made their home in Ponca City and were married 61 years until her death in 2011. After leaving the service, Howard began employment with Continental Oil Company, retiring from Research and Development in 1981.

Howard enjoyed gardening, going to casinos, crossword puzzles, bird watching, reading and bowling, playing in a bowling league for many years. Recently he enjoyed going to McCord Senior Citizen's Center to play pitch. He attended Prairie Chapel Methodist Church. Howard will always be remembered as a gentle, kind person, who was a great husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his children: Mike Powell of Ponca City; Patricia Warner and husband Bob of Luther; Tim Powell and wife Sherrie of Ponca City; Cathy Swenson and husband Mark of Ponca City; Dennis Powell and wife Mary of Ponca City; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary; brothers, Lee, Frank, Kenton, Ralph, Herbert; sisters, Iva Cunningham and Pearl Smith.
