Obituary for Troy Smith

Troy Gene Smith, "Smitty", passed away on April 28, 2019. He was 77 years old. Troy was born on July 28, 1941 the oldest of three children, to Lottie (Provence) Smith and Wallace Smith in Altus, OK. He progressed through the Altus schools and then earned an accounting degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK where he met and shortly after graduation married Barbara Ann Marlin. They moved to Wichita, KS and settled where they had their only child, Kathy in 1966, and he held a variety of jobs before becoming the comptroller of the Wichita Stockyards until they closed in 1980. He relocated to Blackwell, OK to work for Equity Insurance Company. In 1985 he took a position with the IRS in Denver, CO and later retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Throughout his life and career, he traveled the U.S. extensively, falling in love with Alaska, New Mexico, and Colorado, but eventually returned to his roots in Oklahoma. He loved being outdoors hunting, fishing, or just driving around the back roads. He was a jack of all trades that included being musical and artistic, doing woodworking, working on cars, being a certified locksmith, and cooking up of often unusual and questionable but always good food. He was an avid reader and enjoyed sharing his books. He loved his family dearly and cared deeply for his friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Hirschler and husband Timothy of Sedgwick, KS; grandson, Joshua Hirschler of Wichita, KS; granddaughter, Micah Hirschler of Lawrence, KS; sister, Mary Perry of Enid, OK; and many dear and close family and friends far and wide. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Lottie Smith; sister, Anita Palmer Hackley; wife, Barbara Smith; and many other dear family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 10 A.M. at the Trout Funeral Home Chapel, 505 W. Grand Ave., Ponca City, OK. The family respectfully requests no flowers, but memorials may be made in his honor to the NRA (National Rifleman’s Association), the Pawnee Public Library, or your local library.
